Could the Chiefs Be Looking to Make a Move for Tyreek Hill?

A frustrating loss to the Indianapolis Colts in week 1 of the new NFL season was enough to spark rumours about Tyreek Hill getting traded. While the team has since said that they won’t be looking to move the wide receiver, a lot can happen between now and the trade deadline later in November. Following all the reports, Dianna Russini of the Athletic has talked about how likely it would be for the Dolphins to ship Tyreek Hill off to Kansas City.

Following an 8-9 record in their previous campaign, and a poor start to the current season, sportsbooks don’t see things improving for Miami this year. They’re projecting only 6.5 wins for the Dolphins this season and see them as the bottom ten candidates to win the Super Bowl. Whether or not the 2025 season will go this way for the Dolphins remains to be seen. The same reports that claim that Miami won’t be looking to move Hill anytime soon suggest that they’re looking to compete this year. The idea is to win now, and their best chances to do that are with both Hill and Tagovailoa.

The reports suggesting that the Dolphins aren’t looking to trade Hill weren’t enough to stop talking about what his next destination could be. Initial reports linked him to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team that has already completed one blockbuster deal with the Dolphins in the offseason behind us when they traded for Jalen Ramsey.

While the Steelers are no strangers to acquiring star players from the Dolphins, the Hill to  Pittsburgh trade rumors were quickly shut down by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. His main argument against a potential deal was Hill’s cap hit, which makes the Ramsey-Hill reunion highly unlikely.

However, things didn’t end there. Football fans started discussing other potential destinations for Hill in case the Dolphins decide to go through with a trade at some point later in the season. One of the teams that got the most attention in those conversations were the Kansas City Chiefs.

It wouldn’t be difficult to imagine always-savvy Chiefs GM Brett Veach picking up a phone and looking to bring back Hill. Still, it’s more of something Chiefs fans would like to see happen than something that could become a reality.

This was confirmed in a report from Dianna Russini, which mentioned that the Chiefs, at this point, don’t have any plans to trade for Hill. She said that the team is focusing solely on getting Xavier Worthy healthy and waiting for Rashee Rice to return from his six-week suspension.

In fact, Adam Schefter has also confirmed on X that no team has made contact with the Dolphins regarding a trade for Tyreek Hill and that they have no intention of moving him.

It can be assumed that the 33-8 loss to the Colts has already turned the Dolphins around. However, we’ve seen teams recover from even worse starts to the season. If Miami players could again start posting the same numbers they did two years ago, the narrative could change quite quickly.

In 2023, the offense built around Tagovailoa and Hill was among the best in the NFL. The wide receiver finished the season with a career-high 1,799 yards and recorded 13 touchdowns.

Even the season before was extremely productive for the wide receiver as he ended it with 1,710 yards and 7 touchdowns.

It was only last season when things started to go downhill for both Hill and the Dolphins. He finished it with only 959 yards and 6 touchdowns as the team missed out on the Playoffs. Before that, Hill only had two seasons in which he recorded less than 1,000 yards, with one of them being his rookie year and the other the 2019 season in which he appeared only 12 times for the Chiefs.

There’s no doubt everyone on the Dolphins has only one thing on their mind — bouncing back and making this season matter. The best way to do this would be with Hill as a part of the roster.

Whether or not something is going to change in their stance on Hill depends on how Miami is going to perform in the coming weeks. If it turns out to be another disappointing season, a potential trade could be in the mix. Whether or not the Chiefs could be the team calling the Dolphins remains only a theory.

For now, fans can hope that the team will find a way to turn things around and remain competitive until the last game of the season. In that scenario, Hill would remain a Dolphin and play a key role in the team’s Playoff push.
