Washington's team name leaves a lot to be desired. Thanks to a recent ruling by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), pending new owner Josh Harris may have a strong reason to rebrand the team once again.
The USPTO has denied the trademark application for the NFL's Washington Commanders.

On May 18th, the USPTO issued the denial citing two reasons.
1⃣ An existing trademark for "Commanders' Classic."
2⃣ Pending applications filed by a DC-area man.

Per Pro Football Talk, trademark attorney Josh Gerben explained the reasoning behind the refusal, including the annual Army-Air Force football game owning the trademark to "Commanders' Classic" as well as other trademarks by a man named Martin McCaulay for "Washington Space Commanders" and "Washington Wolf Commanders."
"Commanders" has never caught on among fans and new ownership enacting another name change could be an effective way for the team to distance itself from owner Dany Snyder further and find a name that satisfies more people.
Snyder decided on Washington Commanders in February 2022, which was somehow even more uninspiring than when they played as the Washington Football Team from 2020-21.
Of course, both are far better than the derogatory name toward Indigenous Americans the franchise went by for years and which Snyder defended until it began impacting sponsorships.
But choosing a name that isn't a slur is an easy bar to clear. And there are plenty for Harris to choose from, including from his own backyard.
Over a century ago in 1920, an amateur team called the Washington Glee Club played in one professional league game against Olympic gold medalist Jim Thorpe and the Canton Bulldogs.
Just imagine how great the team's touchdown celebrations would be if they came with choreographed musical numbers.
Before the Glee Club, the Washington Vigilants took the sport by storm by going 90-3-1 from 1907-15.
Red Wolves is a fan favorite but team president Jason Wright explained in early 2022 why existing trademarks make that name unfeasible.
Other confirmed possibilities during the team's initial name search included the Armada, Brigade, Defenders, Presidents and Red Hogs. D.C.'s XFL team goes by the Defenders, taking that off the list of viable options.
Gerben noted on Twitter that Washington will likely be able to work things out as far as being granted the "Commanders" trademark down the line. But as PFT notes, the question is whether Harris should want to keep a name no one wanted in the first place.
