Cowboys 1st-Round Draft Plan Revealed by Schottenheimer

In Brian Schottenheimer's first full scouting process as an NFL head coach, he has handled business as well as any could hope.

That is no easy task when you're the head man for the Dallas Cowboys, especially with how crucial this year's NFL Draft is in potentially saving the organization from another let-down season.

With prime positioning in the draft order, the Cowboys have been predicted going many different directions ... partly due to them needing to address so many different positions.

Schotty has dipped into the prediction pond by giving his insight into how he would attack the pick and construct a roster.

"You're always looking for game-changers, when you're picking 12th," Schottenheimer said. "You're looking for guys who influence the game."

These initial comments are pretty vague, but he painted an analogy that gives fans an exciting expectation for the team's top pick.

"You build it from the outside in." he said. "You got corners and receivers. They get isolated one-on-one. Pass rushers [and] tackles, they get isolated one-on-one."

"Usually that's the way I've looked at it ... when you're building a roster, kind of think of it as you're building from the outside in based on guys that get isolated a lot."

Those positions he listed - cornerbacks, receivers, and defensive linemen - just so happen to be some of Dallas' glaring needs that most expect them to aim for in the draft.

May we see an "isolated position" drafted by the Cowboys at No. 12?

That's what many mock-drafters say ... whether that be a receiver or defensive end early on before other major plans.

It now appears coach Schottenheimer agrees with the idea.

An early note on Schottenheimer's reign is his detailed understanding of what he wants, paired with the assertiveness to express it and get it done.

He's conducted a thorough scouting process, explained the brand of football he wants to run and, frankly, has said everything Cowboys fans want to hear.

Even better: he acknowledges what picking 12th means about the season prior ... and wants to change that.

"We don't want to ever pick 12th again, let's be honest. We don't want to pick that high."

If the Cowboys' front office believes in his method of roster construction, they may pay close attention to the available prospects that fit Schotty's vision in next month's NFL Draft.

A solid draft performance will put the Cowboys on their way to more wins in 2025.

The "outside in" approach may be the ticket to get there.
