Cowboys' 2024 draft strategy has changed, and not for the better
© Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Take a look at the Cowboys' most recent draft selections, and which ones stand out.

2020 and 2021 stand out in a good way as the team got CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons in back-to-back years.

2017, 2019, and 2022 (as of right now) stand out in not such a good way.

Now look back at 2020 and 2021 and tell me what they both have in common.

If you guessed they drafted BPA, or "best player available," you would be correct.

The Cowboys did not draft for need, they simply let the board work out and took the best player as they saw it when it was time for them to pick.

This year they cannot do that.

The Cowboys have neglected free agency and they have created many holes on their roster.

There are glaring needs at offensive tackle, center, running back, and linebacker. That is not even mentioning less pressing needs like wide receiver, edge, safety, and corner.

The Cowboys' offseason has been a blunder.

The Cowboys' refusal to go out and spend money on free agency has ruined their chances of following a historic philosophy that good teams tend to follow.

Free agency is for need, the draft is for talent.

The Cowboys can no longer do this, as if they wish to have a shot at remaining competitive they need to address the glaring holes on their roster.

As a fan, you have every right to be angry, as it looks like nothing has changed for the Cowboys. They insist on being bargain bin shoppers and build through the draft. A strategy, as we have discussed that is not a fruitful one.
