Cowboys acquires Broderick Jones in trade with Steelers

The Dallas Cowboys feature players on the roster bubble ahead of NFL roster cutoff day. But the franchise added offensive line help beforehand. Dallas and owner/general manager Jerry Jones struck a deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers to land Broderick Jones.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter broke the Saturday news, adding that Dallas gains a former 2023 first rounder through Jones.

Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott gains help up front here. The Cowboys are sending third and sixth round picks to Pittsburgh. Plus gains a future fourth rounder for the 2027 class.

The Cowboys have endured trouble with protecting Prescott over the years. So this moves arrives late to address that flaw ahead of the regular season. Yet Jones’ arrival likely will push out some aspiring rookies and veterans who aimed to land on the 53-man roster. Names like Sebastian Guiterrez come to mind. Same with Marcellus Johnson, who like the former New England Patriots tackle Guiterrez only has one season of league experience in tow.

Dallas brought in two rookies in former Kentucky Wildcat Shiyazh Pete and ex-Penn State standout Drew Shelton. The Cowboys still feature Tyler Guyton as the blindside protector in this room.

Jones, however, knows the blindside well and can rise as a critical depth piece for this offensive line room. The 25-year-old still heads to Dallas with inconsistency concerns. He’s delivered trouble becoming a consistent starter and has fought through some notable injuries in his career. Perhaps the change in scenery can benefit Jones in the long run while at his new surroundings.
