The Dallas Cowboys are making adjustments to their offense before Sunday’s Week 9 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.
Dallas elevated wide receiver Jordan Hudson and tight end James Mitchell from its practice squad, giving quarterback Dak Prescott additional options with multiple players dealing with injuries. The moves come at a time when the Cowboys are uncertain about the availability of several important offensive contributors.
According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, the elevations were made with George Pickens and Jake Ferguson dealing with injury concerns.
Hudson’s promotion is particularly important given the uncertainty surrounding Dallas’ receiving corps.
Pickens is listed as questionable with a hamstring injury, while KaVontae Turpin has been ruled out with a rib injury. If Pickens is unable to play, the Cowboys could be short on experienced options at wide receiver.
Hudson, an undrafted rookie out of SMU, has spent the season on Dallas’ practice squad. Sunday’s game could provide his first opportunity to appear in an NFL regular-season contest if he is active.
The Cowboys need additional help at the position, especially with Pickens not being fully healthy. Through eight games, Pickens has recorded 39 receptions for 533 yards and two touchdowns. His availability will be worth monitoring leading up to kickoff.
The Cowboys also elevated Mitchell to address uncertainty at tight end.
Ferguson is dealing with an ankle injury, while Luke Schoonmaker has been managing a groin issue. Both players were listed as questionable for Sunday’s matchup with Indianapolis.
Mitchell gives Dallas another experienced option at the position if either player is unavailable or limited. He has appeared in 35 career NFL games, recording 16 receptions for 169 yards and a touchdown during his time in the league.
His presence could be especially valuable if the Cowboys have to rely more heavily on Brevyn Spann-Ford at tight end.
Dallas enters the matchup at 3-5 after a frustrating overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals. The Cowboys had a double-digit lead before their defense surrendered four consecutive touchdown drives, leaving the team with little room for another setback.
The offense has averaged 27.4 points per game, but injuries could complicate its efforts to keep that production going.
Elevating Hudson and Mitchell does not mean Pickens or Ferguson will automatically miss Sunday’s game. Instead, the Cowboys are making sure they have additional personnel available if their injury situations become a problem.
