Cowboys Announce Unfortunate News Before Chargers Game

The Dallas Cowboys enter Week 16 searching for stability after a difficult stretch that has all but closed the door on their postseason hopes. Fresh off a Week 15 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Dallas has dropped two straight games and now welcomes the Los Angeles Chargers to AT&T Stadium.

While the Cowboys are technically still alive, their playoff path is extremely narrow. Sunday’s matchup represents a chance to halt the skid, while they hope for a miracle when the Philadelphia Eagles face the Washington Commanders.

Ahead of Sunday’s game, however, the Cowboys were dealt another setback that further complicates an already uneven season.

On Friday, Dallas announced that cornerback DaRon Bland will undergo season-ending foot surgery, officially ending his 2025 campaign. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer addressed the situation during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan, explaining that the injury developed gradually over time.

“These things happen sometimes when you get your foot fixed and things like that. It’s just something where it kind of over time wore down. It’s unfortunate for DaRon,” Schottenheimer said.

He also noted that the two have spoken extensively since the decision was made. Schottenheimer added there is no concern about Bland’s availability for next year’s training camp, calling the prognosis positive despite the lengthy rehabilitation ahead.

The injury is a significant blow to Dallas’ secondary. Bland had been managing the foot issue throughout the season before it worsened, leading to the decision to proceed with surgery. Bland, who signed a four-year, $92 million extension that includes a $50 million guarantee in August, has been one of Dallas’ most impactful playmakers when healthy.

In 2025, he recorded 73 tackles, six passes defended, three tackles for loss, and an interception returned for a touchdown. His presence in the secondary provided Dallas with experienced coverage and playmaking ability, making his absence a significant blow to a defense already struggling for consistency.

Dallas will attempt to regroup Sunday against the Chargers, while also keeping an eye on the standings. An Eagles win over the Commanders would officially eliminate the Cowboys from playoff contention. Kickoff is set for 4:25 p.m. ET, with the game airing on CBS.
