Football season is upon the Dallas Cowboys, and with the Los Angeles Rams first up at SoFi Stadium, it is the first chance for us to get a glimpse of what Brian Schottenheimer is working with.
Yes, Schotty has already stated he will be very vanilla in what he puts out on film, and there will be a host of starters who will sit out this one.
But for others? Yeah, it's a great chance to showcase their skills and impress the coaching staff. However, one position group that we were excited to see has been hit by the injury bug.
The running back room.
Miles Sanders and Jaydon Blue won't play, nor will Javonte Williams, which leaves Deuce Vaughn, who is coming off a hamstring injury but says he's good to go, Phil Mafah and Hunter Luepke. Oh, and we can't forget the recently signed Malik Davis.
So there are a lot of moving parts to the run game, or as Schottenheimer called it, challenged.
“We're a little bit challenged,” Schottenheimer said. “We got some good backup plans organized, we got some athletes that you guys might see toting the rock a little bit and we'll do some fun things with those guys. Hey, we might have to just go all five wides, and getting in empty and slinging around a little bit, you know? But we're a little thin at that spot, but that opens up opportunities for other guys. Hopefully, we stay pretty healthy in this game.”
Seeing a healthy dose of Mafah, Luepke, and Vaughn would be swell, but also Davis might get some limited reps.
Schottenheimer stated of a potential plan to have some players play 40 preseason snaps across the three games, with 15 against the Rams, then 20 or so against the Baltimore Ravens, and so on.
So, it will be interesting to see who gets what reps at SoFi, but for a "challenged" running back room, all might get their time in the sun.
