Cowboys' Brian Schottenheimer 'Excited' To See Run Game Develop

The Dallas Cowboys' run game will be one of the most-watched things as training camp begins, with head coach Brian Schottenheimer no closer to figuring out who will lead the room in Week 1.

Granted, that's by design; however, with Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders, two free agent signings, along with rookie Jaydon Blue, Hunter Luepke, Deuce Vaughn, and even Phil Mafah, there are a lot of players vying for reps in Oxnard.

But how will things shake out? Will it be Williams and Sanders getting all of the reps and the others picking up the scraps?

“They'll all get fair shot,” Schottenheimer said. “The problem with OTAs for a running back is the game is meant to be played very physically. So, the way you run through the hole is different when you're wearing pads. They'll all get reps, but of the two veteran guys, they both they're very different. Javante looks great, Miles looks great.

"We're excited about Jaydon [Blue], Hunter Luepke, I always talk about him just with his versatility and what he can do and of course there's Deuce [Vaughn]. But that's one of the position rooms that we're very excited to watch and see where it develops, not only through practice, but through the preseason games.”

So everyone will get their opportunity to show they can lead this room and become the starter. Williams and Sanders feel like the front-runners right now, but as we know, training camp has a habit of throwing up a curveball here and there.

The run game last season was ridiculed in training camp with Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle the top two, but now, while there is still some uneasiness to the room, with the additions of Blue and Mafah, to go with the veteran additions, who knows what this room will become.

But Schottenheimer is hoping that someone stakes a claim for the starting role. Who will that be? Your guess is as good as mine.
