Early into training camp, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens insisted that he and new teammate CeeDee Lamb can become the NFL's top one-two punch at the position this season.
Some continue to wonder how Lamb, Dallas' No. 1 receiver, will feel about seeing certain targets go to Pickens during games. On Wednesday, Lamb indicated that he and Pickens have plenty to offer the Cowboys' passing attack as different kinds of weapons.
"The greatest thief of joy is comparisons," Lamb said via The Athletic's Jon Machota. "It will kill you. … We’re going to play to our strengths. It’s just playing off one another. Whoever has the hot hand, good luck, because we’re probably on fire."
Lamb has taken Pickens under his wing after the Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly grew "fed up with" him until the club traded Pickens to Dallas in May. During Pickens' Pittsburgh tenure, the 2022 second-round draft pick developed a reputation for looking upset on the sidelines regarding a perceived lack of targets. That's notable, considering he seemingly won't receive an extension from the Cowboys until he plays on the final year of his rookie contract.
Meanwhile, Lamb inked a four-year, $136M deal last summer.
"All we got to do is keep our heads down and grind," Lamb added while speaking about Pickens. "It’s already destined. Like, at birth. With the talent that we have, as soon as we break the huddle, it’s already destined. At the end of the day, it comes down to the work that we put in. How serious are we about it? Are we going to take this to the next level, or are we just going to be another duo that’s just playing ball together?"
Pro Bowl guard Tyler Smith and quarterback Dak Prescott have spoken openly this summer about the team's pursuit of a Super Bowl championship. As of Thursday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Cowboys at +180 betting odds to make the playoffs this season.
Lamb isn't publicly embracing a "Super-Bowl-or-bust" mantra, but that doesn't mean he's lacking confidence about what Dallas will achieve over the next few months.
"I’m light on my words because I really don’t like to do the rah-rah [stuff] and then it doesn’t come to fruition," Lamb continued. "But I know one thing for sure … I know we’re going to have a good one this year. That’s for sure."
