Justin Fields and the New York Jets are still searching for their first win. Even so, Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer won’t overlook the dual-threat quarterback, a former No. 11 overall draft pick.
Schottenheimer discussed what Fields brings to the table on Wednesday.
“He presents a number of problems just based on the skill set,” Schottenheimer said. “The athleticism, the arm strength, arm talent, ability to improvise … The good news for us is no one knows him around the league probably better than Matt (Eberflus).”
Eberflus took over for the Chicago Bears in 2022, a season after the franchise chose Fields , banking on him as its future behind center. Upon his hiring, Eberflus said his plan was to build the Bears’ attack around Fields, which didn’t work out as either had hoped. Fields was shipped to the Pittsburgh Steelers before last season, while Eberflus didn’t last in Chicago through it.

Despite going 4-2 during his first and only six starts with the Steelers, Fields was benched in favor of Russell Wilson, with whom Mike Tomlin’s crashed and burned at the end of the campaign. Fields chose to join the Jets in free agency on a two-year, $40 million deal.
Through three starts this season, he’s thrown for 471 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He’s also rushed for 178 yards and three touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Eberflus, who's now the Cowboys' defensive coordinator, designs aunit that ranks No. 32 in yards allowed (1,682) and passing yards allowed (1,189) and No. 31 in yards allowed per play (6.4).
