George Pickens had a forgettable outing on Thursday night as the Dallas Cowboys suffered a 44-30 defeat at the hands of the Detroit Lions. Pickens needed to step up after fellow wide receiver CeeDee Lamb was forced to leave the game due to a concussion, but Pickens wasn’t able to do enough to help lift Dallas. He finished with five catches for 37 yards.
Pickens’ performance drew some heavy criticism from NFL icon Richard Sherman. The Cowboys wideout did not appreciate the call-out and fired back with an unfiltered response. This drew the attention of Dallas head coach Brian Schottenheimer, who said he would discuss the latest controversy with Pickens.
Sherman was part of Amazon Prime Video’s broadcast of “Thursday Night Football.” After the game, the three-time All-Pro defensive back slammed Pickens for looking “uninterested” and “disengaged” during the loss.
After the game, Pickens admitted that “you can’t just disappear” as he addressed Sherman’s comments. The Cowboys WR, however, was not as cordial on Friday as he fired back at Sherman in a now-deleted post.
Pickens ripped into the Super Bowl-winning DB, criticizing Sherman for singling him out when it’s supposed to be a “team game.” Pickens went on to say that he thinks "it's funny cause I thought former players would know that." The 24-year-old wide receiver also attacked Sherman’s legacy by saying he “AINT SHH WITHOUT THE LEGION OF BOOM."
Schottenheimer spoke to reporters on Friday, and he decided to address the situation at hand.
"I'm aware of what was supposedly put out there," Schottenheimer said, via ESPN. "I've not talked to him yet. I understand it's been taken down, but I will be talking to him, just checking on him. Again, this is unfortunately things that we deal with in this profession. But I have not spoken to him, but I will."
Schottenheimer did not indicate whether he intends to reprimand Pickens for his response, but it is clear that the first-year coach isn't entirely pleased with how Pickens has reacted to Sherman's criticism.
This is not the first time Pickens has been involved in controversy. He joined the Cowboys during the offseason via a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who reportedly sent the former second-round pick packing because he was a “child.” The report went on to indicate that Pickens “just really struggled with the maturity part [in Pittsburgh]. You didn't know what you were going to get day to day."
Pickens will have an opportunity to bounce back in Dallas’ next game. This comes in the form of a Week 14 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. The Cowboys will play at home on Dec. 14, with kickoff from AT&T Stadium scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET.
