Cowboys Coach Makes Bold Statement On Wide Receivers For 2024
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys don’t have a whole lot of depth at the wide receiver position.

Of course, they have CeeDee Lamb, who is one of the best wide outs in football. Then, there is veteran Brandin Cooks, who joined the Cowboys last season and was a fairly significant disappointment.

After that, there really isn’t much there.

Dallas cut Michael Gallup earlier this offseason, as he was clearly not the same after tearing his ACL a few years ago. That leaves Jalen Tolbert and Jalen Brooks as the top two candidates to land the No. 3 receiver role, which is certainly cause for concern.

However, Cowboys wide receivers coach Robert Prince is expecting big things from Tolbert and Brooks heading into 2024.

“We expect all of those guys to make a jump,” Prince said, via Dallas’ official team website. “It starts with [Tolbert]. He made a big jump from Year 1 to Year 2, and we expect the same thing to happen for him going into Year 3. And Jalen Brooks, he works hard and he’s one of those guys that’s always studying, and he can play all of the [WR] positions — so we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do this year as well.”

Tolbert caught 22 passes for 268 yards and a couple of touchdowns in 2023, which was technically a “big jump” from his rookie campaign when he logged just two catches for 12 yards.

Meanwhile, Brooks totaled six grabs for 64 yards this past year, which was his debut season.

Dallas was unable to make any moves to bolster its receiving corps in free agency, as it entered the offseason with severe financial constraints. It also did not select a receiver in the NFL Draft until the sixth round, when it chose Ryan Flournoy.

Not only that, but the Cowboys are locked in a contract standoff with Lamb, who is preparing to enter the final year of his deal and is expected to skip voluntary workouts.

Dallas ranked third in the league in passing offense in 2023, thanks much in part to the dominance of Lamb. But there is no question that the Cowboys have legitimate questions as far as weapons are concerned going into next season.

We’ll see if Prince is right in his prediction that some of Dallas’ youngsters at the position will step up.
