Cowboys Could Follow Dak Prescott Blueprint in Mega Extension for Micah Parsons

Jeremy Fowler delivered a mixed report on Micah Parsons‘ potential contract extension with the Dallas Cowboys. According to the veteran ESPN insider, the situation in Dallas is relaxed because players and the staff are on vacation. The talks will likely resume upon their return during the training camp.

Unlike TJ Watt in Pittsburgh or Trey Hendrickson in Cincinnati, Parsons has been relatively muted in demanding an extension, barring the occasional retort directed at owner Jerry Jones.

Parsons reminded the Cowboys GM that his demands will rise depending on the market. If Jones had shown the urgency, then Parsons would have settled on an extension ranging between $30 and $35 million per year. Meanwhile, Watt wants $40 million to surpass Myles Garrett and Ja’Marr Chase. If Watt gets his deal, then Parsons would prefer to match that number.

Now the question stands: why does Jones continue to delay Parsons’ extension even though he knows the Cowboys might have to pay him more than the initial number?

So, this is kind of a relaxed situation [in Dallas]. You know, when I talk to the people involved, they’re like, ‘Look, it’s a lull in the summer right now; not a lot going on. People are on vacation. Team officials were out on the beach somewhere.

Jones blew an early chance to extend Parsons’ services after he bypassed his agent, David Mulugheta. This act ticked off the pro bowler, and the negotiations nearly broke down because Parsons did not want to sit at the table without his agent.

Ironically, the Cowboys’ newest addition, wide receiver George Pickens, shares the same agent as Parsons. Mulugheta and Jones will cross paths again in 2026 when it will be Pickens’ turn for an extension.

Fowler believes Micah Parsons will end up signing a Dak Prescott-style extension

Parsons can earn a staggering $40 million/year if all the cards fall in his favor. However, the Cowboys also hold a trump card of their own, but they will have to be very cautious about whether to use it or not.

Jerry has the power to impose the franchise tag on the 26-year-old, forcing him to play on minimum wage. This will benefit the Cowboys in the short term, but it’s better to avoid going down that road to avoid a Saquon Barkley-like situation.

The best course of action would be for the Cowboys to pay Parsons quickly.

Dallas wants to pay Micah Parsons; that’s no secret. They are in on this… You’ve seen Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb in the past get four-year deals with huge guarantees. Dallas typically, in the past, wants to do five-year deals. So it’s about how far Micah Parsons wants to push the envelope.

The Cowboys did not have much of a choice in Prescott’s case. They could not trade him, and the quarterback market was set several times in the last couple of years, increasing the value of the position by five times what it was a decade ago. Prescott signed a $60 million-per-year extension to become the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history.

Lamb, on the other hand, cut himself off from the Cowboys completely. He missed a chunk of the offseason workouts, including the minicamp and OTAs. Jerry eventually caved in when trade talks started to get out of control, giving Lamb a $34 million per year extension.

Parsons has already informed the Cowboys that he has no intention of holding out from training camp. He showed up for OTAs and is expected to attend the training camp in late July.
