Cowboys’ Dak Prescott Makes Bold Claim On Contract Extension

The Dallas Cowboys have reached a stalemate with quarterback Dak Prescott in contract extension talks, and it’s looking more and more likely that Prescott may end up playing out 2024 on the final year of his deal.

Prescott is rumored to be seeking in the neighborhood of $60 million annually, a price the Cowboys are apparently unwilling to pay.

This has created quite the standoff between Dallas and Prescott, but it has not stopped Prescott from participating in organized team activities.

When asked about negotiations this week, Prescott did not seem too concerned.

“I don’t play for money,” Prescott said, via Todd Archer of ESPN. “Never have never cared for it, to be honest with you, yeah. Would give it up just to play this game. So, I allow that to the business people to say what it’s worth, what they’re supposed to give a quarterback of my play, a person of my play, a leader of my play. For me, it’s about, as I said, control what I can control and handle that part and the rest will take care of itself.”

That sounds all well and good, but if the Cowboys end up low-balling Prescott, he will almost surely be singing a different tune.

Still, the three-time Pro Bowler certainly deserves credit for showing up to voluntary workouts.

“Business is business,” Prescott said. “I’ll leave it where it gets handled. Right now, it’s about being my best for this team right now, in this moment, in OTAs and helping these guys out. I’m just focused on that and I know my business will take care of itself. I’ve been in [this situation] before, so I’m experienced and just controlling what I can right now.”

Prescott is coming off of a brilliant 2023 campaign in which he led the NFL with 36 touchdown passes to go along with 4,516 yards and nine interceptions. He also completed 69.5 percent of his passes and posted a passer rating of 105.9, finishing second in MVP voting in the process.

The 31-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Mississippi State, was selected by Dallas in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

He was supposed to begin his career as Tony Romo’s backup, but a preseason injury to Romo forced Prescott into action immediately. He has been the Cowboys’ starting quarterback ever since.

We’ll see if the two sides are able to reach an agreement before next season.
