March is "Women's History Month", and while the Dallas Cowboys are busy with scouting combine notes, draft prospect interviews and free-agency negotiations, the organization also welcomes a new opportunity for young fans.
Chief Brand Officer Charlotte Jones and NFL Vice President of Flag Football Stephanie Kwok hosted a press conference and kick-off event at AT&T Stadium to announce the launch of the High School Girls Flag Football League.
The league "creates opportunities where athletes can develop their skills, build confidence, and foster continuous growth and sustainability through the game," says DallasCowboys.com.
Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and his fiancé Sarah Jane Ramos welcomed their first daughter in May ... and the couple has another girl on the way...
Prescott attended the event and when he wasn't playing catch with the kids, he expressed his fatherly passion for the league's mission.
"It's creating opportunities," Prescott said during the event's media availability. "Just being a girl dad, I want to champion that. I champion everything that I can not only give my daughters, but other girls the opportunities to do everything and anything in life."
This opportunity also allows people across the state to get a formal introduction to flag football as an official sport. The game will be premiered for the first time in Olympic competition at the Summer Games in Los Angeles in 2028.
Varsity flag football has already been implemented at the high school and collegiate levels across the country. This venture is the latest push to get the sport sanctioned in Texas by the UIL.
"The life lessons and values these young ladies will learn from the game of football extend well beyond touchdowns and teamwork," Jones told DallasCowboys.com.
Prescott added: "The game of football has given me so much. I want to thank the girls for paving the way ... and for breaking barriers to grow the game. It is important to have female role models in sports and I am thankful that the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL are helping create new opportunities."
The league features 86 high school teams from across Texas, 54 of which are from the DFW area. Regular-season play begins this month, with a championship game played at the Ford Center in May.
To kick off Women's History Month, the Dallas Cowboys continue to make history in their efforts to grow inclusivity and accessibility in women's sports.
