FRISCO — When the Dallas Cowboys restructured the current contracts for Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb a few weeks ago, many presumed that could pave the way for the team to acquire a big time playmaker early in free agency.
After the first wave of this period, that has not been the case. Dallas whiffed on Cooper Kupp and have not made any further serious attempts to available high end pieces.
Instead, the team has signed Parris Campbell to their receiving corps while adding Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders to their backfield. None of those moves move the needle for the Cowboys heading into the 2025 season.
There are still some names available as the second wave gets into gear, but more likely than not, any major additions to the team's offensive skilled positions will have to come during the NFL Draft.
However, the latest mock draft from Pro Football Focus has the Cowboys targeting an unusual position with the No. 12 overall pick. John Kosko has Dallas selecting Penn State tight end Tyler Warren with their first selection.
"The Cowboys have a lot of needs, but they’ve lacked a reliable weapon outside of CeeDee Lamb in recent seasons," he writes. "Enter, Warren, a versatile tight end who can play in-line to help in the run game and spread out wide as a mismatch against linebackers and safeties."
Dallas is not necessarily in need of a tight end with Jake Ferguson and Luke Schoonmaker at hand. But Warren's use goes beyond any positional need.
No. 2 receiver Jalen Tolbert was the only other player besides Lamb to break 500 receiving yards last season. Injuries and scheme had a role in Dallas' inability to attack a defense downfield last season, but that lack of explosiveness must change moving forward.
Warren brings that big play capacity at the tight end position. Though Jake Ferguson currently holds claim to the No. 1 label there, it is not hard to fathom a run-focused Cowboys offense utilizing multiple tight ends with pass-catching ability.
If the goal is simply to find another receiver to pair with Lamb, then Dallas will have their selection of valuable targets early on. But with Warren's versatility, he is at least worth a look if available when the Cowboys are on the clock.
