Cowboys elevation for Eagles game reveals rookie is impressing coaches

For the second consecutive week, the Dallas Cowboys are elevating rookie tight end Princeton Fant from the practice squad. He'll play against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 14 for one of the biggest games of the season.

The undrafted tight end out of Tennessee that went overlooked in the 2023 NFL Draft is slated toward special teams duty more than anything else. Last weekend, he played in special teams snaps despite it being a game with no punts involved. Fant played in both kickoffs and kickoff returns.

His being elevated again is a very promising sign for him as he's temporarily one-upping WR Jalen Brooks, a seventh-round draft pick who's even seen some playing time on offense this year. Last week, Brooks was a healthy scratch as a result of the elevation and while this week's inactives won't be official until tomorrow night, it's a fair bet to assume Brooks will be on the list yet again.

This will be Fant's second of three possible practice squad elevations to the gameday roster. After that, the Cowboys would need to sign him to their 53-man roster to play him again. Considering the recent trend, it's safe to say coaches like what they see out of Fant.

After all, it's not an elevation that's about an injury or being shorthanded at a certain position. The Cowboys already carry three tight ends and a fullback on gameday. Fant is still making the gameday roster on top of that.

The Cowboys' special teams unit, coached by coordinator John Fassel, has had a lot of rotation this season as the team has gone through injuries to key contributors. Fant brings a little bit more size and strength to the unit than Brooks, a wide receiver.
