Former Dallas Cowboys player Chris Canty came out publicly and sided with DeMarcus Lawrence who said Thursday he had to leave Dallas to win a Super Bowl.
It appears as though Canty did, too.
"I had to leave the Dallas Cowboys to win my damn championship and the team that beat the best Cowboys team that I was a part of in 2007 was the New York Giants," Canty said. "There was no reason from a talent standpoint that the Giants should've beaten the 2007 Dallas Cowboys, who had 13 Pro Bowlers. But they did on their way to winning Super Bowl 42."
Micah Parsons and Lawrence were teammates for four seasons before Lawrence signed with the Seattle Seahawks this week. Our Mike Fisher has reported over the years of a sort of "leadership tug-of-war'' between the two, most recently in a subtle way with Micah announcing "It's my time!'' just as Lawrence was leaving.
Fish noted that "It's my time'' was about taking over the leadership of the locker room with D-Law no longer in the way.
But any fake-congeniality between the two took a negative turn on Thursday when Lawrence said while Dallas is his home, he's not going to win a Super Bowl with the team.
“Dallas is my home. I've made my home there, my family lives there. I'm forever gonna be there, but I know for sure I’m not gonna win a Super Bowl there. So, yeah. We here," Lawrence said.
Parson was quick with the retort.
"This what rejection and envy look like! This some clown (expletive)," Parsons tweeted.
Lawrence then came back with his own statement and told Parsons to concentrate on winning and to lay off social media.
"Calling me a clown won’t change the fact that I told the truth. Maybe if you spent less time tweeting and more time winning, I wouldn’t have left," Lawrence tweeted.
However, Canty was not finished with his social media campaign. Now, he was taking a shot at Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones.
"And the reality is, Jerry Jones still hasn't figured out that the best players don't always make the best team, but the best team always wins," Canty said. "The Dallas Cowboys haven't had trouble finding talented players, but they haven't figured out how to build a football team, and that's where things are right now."
Canty may have some things twisted here; there is nothing about the Cowboys' 2024 roster or the projected 2025 lineup that reflects anything about "the best players.''
But as Fisher has pointed out frequently, the high profile of the Cowboys has resulted in Jones being marketing-minded ... which can lead players to thinking as individual "brands'' other than as a team.
And in fairness ... Chris Canty - with the Super Bowl ring, fully to his credit - played for the Cowboys and is now at ESPN.
How do we think that happened?
