Cowboys get 2024 NFL free agency started with important special teams re-signing
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

During the first day of 2024 NFL free agency on Monday, the Dallas Cowboys were the one team in the league that did not sign any of its own free agents nor outside players to the roster.

Day 2 might just be different as they finally got a deal: Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Cowboys are re-signing long snapper Trent Sieg. The Dallas Morning News reports it's a one-year deal for Sieg.

Sieg arrived to Dallas in 2023 and didn't miss a game all season long, providing some stability to the position after the Cowboys played two long snappers in 2022 following Jake McQuaide's season-ending injury.

Getting Sieg back for another year isn't the only special teams concern the Cowboys are facing this offseason. Ace C.J. Goodwin is also a free agent as of today and following a season-ending pectoral injury last year, it's unclear if the team will bring him back for another run.

Evidently, special teams coordinator John Fassel likes Goodwin so expect him to return. But with the way the Cowboys' front office is operating this year, we can't be too sure of anything.

For now, the Cowboys get their long snapper back, which means Brandon Aubrey will be a happy man as his process won't be messed with: Aubrey went 36-of-38 in field goal attempts while earning First-Team All-Pro honors in his first year in the NFL.

It's definitely good to know Sieg will be back as the long snapper and Bryan Anger will remain the holder of the operation. Things should continue to run smoothly for Aubrey in 2024.
