Cowboys In 'Serious Trouble' For How They Handled Micah Parsons Situation

The consequences for the Dallas Cowboys' public falling out with Micah Parsons are likely to extend well beyond his mere absence from the team and the draft pick compensation from the trade with the Green Bay Packers.

The genesis of this entire saga was Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones flat-out refusing to work with Parsons' agent David Mulugheta to hammer out the structure of the new deal. Jones repeatedly made it clear to the public that he does not want to work with agents and prefers to negotiate with players directly.

But while Jones may not care for Mulugheta, there's one powerful group of people that does: Other NFL agents.

On Friday, ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio revealed that he received a message from a longtime NFL agent admonishing the Cowboys for how they handled the situation with Parsons' agent. The agent seemingly warned that agents talk to each other a lot and that Jones' treatment of Mulugheta will result in agents deciding to steer their clients away from the Cowboys in the future.

“You have no idea how damaging this episode is for the Cowboys as it relates to the entire agent community. We all talk and nobody would ever willingly steer their clients to that team. Make no mistake, they’ve never been a honest or good organization, but since [Jerry] so brazenly disrespected and went behind the back of a top player’s top agent, they are in serious trouble moving forward. This is really one of those ‘time to take the car keys away’ moments," the agent told Florio.

Impactful, or not?

The Dallas Cowboys don't make a ton of big-name free agency signings to begin with. For years and years the primary method for top-tier talent acquisition has been the draft and trades.

As a result, this alleged threat from an NFL agent might not actually have as much of an impact on Jerry Jones' management of the team as it appears.

The much bigger problem is likely to be future contract negotiations with players the Cowboys want to retain and extend.

Dallas can make all of the trades they want, but if they want to extend them, they'll have to work with an agent and if Jones continues to refuse to work with agents and vice-versa, all the Cowboys are going to have in terms of elite talent are short-term rentals.

Micah Parsons isn't David Mulugheta's only client on the Cowboys either. The team recently acquired wide receiver George Pickens, and if Pickens plays well enough that the team wants to keep him in Big D on a long-term deal, they're going to be in this exact same spot when the time comes.

Jerry Jones can assert that the Cowboys came out on top in this trade all he wants. But the damage he may have done to his team can extend well beyond the handful of players that were ultimately involved.
