Just be quiet and get the deal done. That's all Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had to do after Micah Parsons sensationally requested a trade, with contract talks not moving forward at all in Oxnard.
But we know Jerry can't be quiet.
And a day after Micah's request, the Cowboys were back on the practice field, with Parsons seen in a hoodie and not wearing his No. 11 shirt for the first time in Oxnard, and Jerry spoke with the media. Because, of course, right?
Jerry was asked about Micah's trade request, and he had a message to Cowboy Nation, and it is one that is going to make the blood pressure rise.
“I would say to our fans, don't lose any sleep over this,” Jones said, essentially vowing that Micah won't be traded. ... while adding that his alleged "on the table'' offer was monumental.
"What y'all don't know is what I offered him, and it's a helluva lot more than you think I did," Jones said. "That's what you don't know ... But my point is I reached. Make no mistake about it. I reached."
Cue the face palm emoji.
The insinuation is that Jones himself didn't "lose sleep'' over Micah's demands. ... and exactly how does announcing that help bring peace and finality to negotiations?
Why did Jerry need to say anything at all? While we stated that Micah's request was likely part of the negotiations in an attempt to push through a deal, Jones is now fanning the flames.
And "a deal isn't a deal'' until it's a deal. Jones knows this, too ... no matter how large his "handshake offer'' was.
Why is Jerry still talking here? Your guess is as good as mine, but there is no need to be in front of the media, especially at a time like this. It is clear Parsons is disgruntled, and he has every right to be, but Jones (in my opinion) needed to go radio silent and work on getting his best player signed to a new contract.
But that seems a little too hard.
And here we are, a day after the franchise's best player has requested a trade and called out the front office, we have Jerry saying, "Don't lose sleep over this."
As the star turns.
