Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones made the right call when he refused to pay the asking price for free agent quarterbacks Jacoby Brissett or Drew Lock. Neither player deserves to wear the Star on the helmet at any price.
Jones made the perfect decision to trade a fifth-round choice to the New England Patriots for former Tennessee Volunteer superstar Joe Milton. The Cowboys are also getting a seventh-round pick back from the Patriots.
Milton has one year in the league and is on a rookie contract. He fits in the salary cap nicely and has the tools to possibly take over one day for Dak Prescott. Should Prescott be forced to miss additional time due to injuries, Milton should fit in with the Brian Schottenheimer offense real well.
This is not like the Trey Lance debacle. Jones wasted a fourth-round pick for a player who was not fit to see the field. Jones took a shot on the former first-round pick and it didn't work out.
Milton is not Lance. This kid is a winner and it is going to work out nicely.
The right move was also to avoid paying free agent sums of money to Brissett and Lock. Neither player has accomplished much since being in the league and would be best defined as journeymen. They keep signing one or two-year deals and look for a new team thereafter. The Cowboys needed a young quarterback they can keep and groom for a larger period of time.
Is Jones cheap because he did not pay Brissett $12.5 million over two years like the Arizona Cardinals just did? No, it makes him smart. For that kind of money he could have kept Cooper Rush who is getting $12.2 million for two years with the Baltimore Ravens.
Lock was in the NFC East last season with the New York Giants. He had a nice receiver corps which featured then-rookie Malik Nabers and he could not win with them. He did win a meaningless game over the Indianapolis Colts at the end of the season, but he is not a good starting quarterback and cannot even manage a game properly.
