The Dallas Cowboys have had three different defensive coordinators in the past three seasons.
And just when it seemed that DC Matt Eberflus had turned things around, the defense has given up 78 points in the past two games. That's why, with the playoffs almost out of reach, team owner/GM Jerry Jones is putting some pressure on his defensive coordinator. Following the 34-26 home loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Jones admitted that Eberflus might be coaching for his job in the next three games.
"The adjustments that we should be making (defensively) should be with these next three games in mind," Jones said, per The Athletic’s Jon Machota. "With three games left in the short time that we’ve got to play them in, then that will impact any adjustments that you make regarding coaching with the time frame we’re dealing with. That’s a legit question."
The Cowboys won their first three games after the Quinnen Williams trade, but they've regressed to their old ways in the past two contests. They gave up 327 total yards to the Vikings, which isn't necessarily bad, but they allowed them to complete 3-of-4 fourth-down attempts, and only forced two punts.
The struggling J.J. McCarthy completed 15-of-24 passes for 250 yards, two touchdowns and one pick. The Cowboys failed to keep Minnesota off the field down the stretch when the game was still in reach.
Eberflus is a well-respected defensive specialist who would probably land a job right away if let go by the Cowboys, but after giving up 30.0 points per game, Jones might not have many incentives to keep him around.
