Cowboys’ Jerry Jones Sounds Off On Dak Prescott’s Contract Status

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is due for a new contract, and owner Jerry Jones is well aware of that.

That’s one of the reasons why the Cowboys have been somewhat frugal this offseason, only making one free-agent signing, much to the chagrin of their fan base.

With Prescott angling for a long-term deal, Jones says that he believes in the signal-caller going forward.

“We think he’s a great quarterback. That is really the gist of what we’re about this year. We’ve got Dak,” Jones said, via Clarence E. Hill of The Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “I think Dak will be at the top of his game. I’ve said that I do think he will improve from where he is now. I think we’ll have that.”

Does that mean Jones will hand Prescott a massive contract worth in the neighborhood of $60 million? While Jones doesn’t seem opposed to it, he kind of hinted that Prescott should volunteer to take less.

“As you address a player like Dak, you take away from his supporting cast,” Jones said. “That’s not a sales job. Everybody realizes, if you get the bucks, someone else who can help you win doesn’t. That’s factual.”

In other words, if Dallas does give Prescott that type of money, it won’t be able to supply him with very good players around him.

Still, Jones clearly values Prescott and wants him to remain with the Cowboys for the long haul.

“When I think of Dak, he’s one of those in the top paid that haven’t won that I think can,” Jerry Jones said. “I think there are a handful or more of quarterbacks playing who haven’t won a Super Bowl that will win a Super Bowl. I think Dak is one of them. I’m firm there.”

Prescott is coming off of a spectacular 2023 campaign in which he led the NFL with 36 touchdown passes to go along with 4,516 yards and just nine interceptions. He finished second in MVP voting as a result.

However, the Cowboys lost to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs, dropping Dak Prescott’s postseason record to 2-5.
