Cowboys' latest free agency signing could be made even better with follow-up All-Pro move
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys are bringing back cornerback Jourdan Lewis after allowing him to hit free agency earlier this week.

Per ESPN's Todd Archer, it is a one-year deal for Lewis, who recovered from a nasty foot injury last year and ended up starting eight games for the Cowboys after being considered to be on the roster bubble by many before the start of the regular season.

While Cowboys fans agree the team's start to free agency has been way too slow, bringing back Lewis is a smart football move.

If the Cowboys had to line up for a game today, Lewis would be your starter at nickel, where he's shined in large part thanks to his physicality, boasting impressive tackling skills. Among the 75 cornerbacks with the most snaps, Lewis ranked 13th-best in missed tackle percentage, per PFF.

Re-signing Stephon Gilmore would make Lewis decision drastically better

Lewis' spot in the starting lineup isn't guaranteed as question marks remain on the status of All-Pro veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who also hit free agency earlier in the week.

If the Cowboys manage to re-sign him, it would mean Lewis would become the clear-cut CB4 of the team, with All-Pro cornerback Daron Bland taking over the slot.

In this scenario, the Cowboys would have a unique advantage with Bland as if they suffer an injury to one of their outside corners, Bland could kick outside while Lewis takes over the slot, meaning Lewis would be an great depth piece no matter who goes down.

The Cowboys can make this even better by doubling down at cornerback and targeting Gilmore. It'd be a smart move considering their most pressing needs will likely have to wait until the 2024 NFL Draft after letting Tyron Smith and Tyler Biadasz hit free agency.
