Luke Schoonmaker's first two NFL offseasons were ruined by injuries, but now, as he enters Year 3 with the Dallas Cowboys, as tight end coach Lunda Wells said, he needs to "get on the grass."
And Luke has been doing that.
Able to get a full offseason of work in during OTAs, minicamp, and training camp, "Schoon" is moving far quicker than he has in previous seasons, plus he looks a little leaner.
Battling Brevyn Spann-Ford for the TE2 role, Schoonmaker isn't about to roll over and give up, he's determined to keep things rolling in Oxnard.
But what has been the catalyst for Luke to finally be able to enjoy a full offseason?
"I definitely think was my greatest just health-wise," Schoonmaker said. "Moving around really well, got over to Sports Academy in Frisco there, give them a lot of credit for the work that they do. Then the experience I think going into year three, feeling confident with the scheme and getting to work with Dak too in the offseason was huge. Whether we're hopping over to a high school around us and putting that work in and just preparing for out here [Oxnard] and the season."
It is looming as a big 2025 for Schoonmaker, who, aside from the odd glimpse here and there, for a second-round pick, has underwhelmed for the most part.
With Ferguson leading the way, Schoonmaker has to start making headway on gameday, as he'll enter his contract year in 2026 needing to produce something special to stay on the roster.
Having not had a proper NFL preseason in his first two years in the league, it appears that Schoon is now discovering the benefits of "getting on the grass" on Oxnard.
