Brandon Aubrey has been one of the most consistent players for the Dallas Cowboys this season. However, the All-Pro kicker was involved in a completely unexpected development in Sunday’s primetime game against the Minnesota Vikings — one that has not happened in over two decades.
Aubrey, who entered Sunday’s contest with 27-of-29 completed field goal attempts (93.1%) and 38-of-39 on extra points (97.4%), took the Vikings by surprise with a fake field goal play early in the game. It was a successful sequence for Dallas, too, which resulted in the team making an announcement on social media shortly after the play.
Aubrey is now in his third season with the Cowboys. The former professional soccer player has been a revelation for Dallas since he joined the team in 2023, being named a Pro Bowler in both of his first two seasons with the Cowboys.
Aubrey checked into the game early in the first quarter for what was supposed to be a 57-yard field goal attempt. While this is considerably farther out by usual standards, Aubrey has proven that he is very much capable of scoring from this distance. This season, the 30-year-old is 9-of-11 on his attempts beyond 50 yards, with his season-long currently at 64 yards.
Aubrey, however, never got the chance to kick the ball. Instead, the Cowboys pulled off a field goal fake, resulting in Aubrey sliding in for a six-yard gain and the first down.

After the play, Dallas made an announcement about the unexpected turn of events.
“The Dallas Cowboys ran a successful fake field goal when Brandon Aubrey rushed for six yards. The last time Dallas had a fake field goal attempt was in 2001 at Arizona (12/23),” Dallas Cowboys Public Relations posted on X.
Aubrey’s fake field goal turned out to be a crucial play on that drive. The Cowboys were eventually able to get on the board during the drive, with Javonte Williams scoring the first touchdown of the game with a 1-yard run. Aubrey scored the extra point to put Dallas up, 7-0.
It has been a tightly contested affair at AT&T Stadium thus far. As of writing, the Cowboys and the Vikings are all tied up at the halftime break, 17-17.
