FRISCO — The Dallas Cowboys' hire of Brian Schottenheimer last week stirred frustration and confusion around the fan base with many questioning the franchise motives. Schottenheimer had no interest elsewhere around the league and suddenly steps into one of the most difficult jobs in the NFL.
But Schottenheimer has calmed those nerves this week first with the persona demonstrated at his introductory press conference and then in the people has identified to work around him.
That began with the Cowboys bringing on Matt Eberflus as their defensive coordinator and continued with a series of effective moves. Friday, the Cowboys maintained Lunda Wells on their staff as their tight end coach and hired former Arizona Cardinals offensive line coach Klayton Adams as offensive coordinator.
Now, they are turning to the college ranks (and to a former Cowboy) to potentially fill their running backs coach vacancy.
According to Nick Harris of the Forth Worth Star Telegram, the Cowboys are interviewing University of Texas running backs coach Tashard Choice for the same position on their staff.
Choice has an excellent resumé in terms of the players he has worked with including Bijan Robinson, Jahmyr Gibbs and Roschon Johnson. He has been at Texas since 2022.
His NFL career spanned six seasons, four of which consisted of time in Dallas.
Choice would make for yet another notable addition to this staff around Schottenheimer and would further represent the Cowboys' commitment to reestablishing a sound run game.
Whether that directly points to a selection of Ashton Jeanty in the NFL Draft in April remains to be seen, but this appears a strong indicator of where the Cowboys and Schottenheimer have their sights set heading into next season.
