Not long after it was learned on Monday that the Dallas Cowboys were moving on from head coach Mike McCarthy, some suggested that Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones could call the Pittsburgh Steelers about the availability of coach Mike Tomlin.
During the latest edition of his "The Edge" podcast, Cowboys star pass-rusher Micah Parsons addressed the Tomlin trade rumors that seemingly aren't quieting down anytime soon.
"We've been seeing a lot of stuff with Tomlin, people should trade for Tomlin, other execs said we should move on, but are you mad? Tomlin hasn't had a losing season in his career (since 2007)," Parsons said, as shared by Ross McCorkle of Steelers Depot. "I think he's one of the most beautifully gifted coaches in the NFL when it comes to building people around him and making them elite, making them better."
Players around the league routinely mention wanting to play for Tomlin, the one-time Super Bowl champion head coach who most recently guided Pittsburgh to four playoff appearances over the past five seasons. However, his critics have repeatedly mentioned since the club's wild-card loss to the rival Baltimore Ravens this past Saturday that the Steelers haven't won a postseason game since the 2016 campaign.
Tomlin signed a three-year contract extension this past offseason, and his deal reportedly includes a no-trade clause. On Tuesday, he directly told teams that may want to trade for his services to "save your time."
History shows that Jones could view such a comment as a challenge. If nothing else, it sounds like Parsons would happily welcome Tomlin to Dallas.
"When you have a coach that instills belief," Parsons continued, "instills that type of determination throughout the week and proclaims that for your success and it happens, man, you should never go against that. I think the Steelers would be delusional to move on from Tomlin."
The Steelers don't seem to be in any rush to make such a franchise-altering decision, and Tomlin could reject any trade offered to Pittsburgh by a club such as the Cowboys. With that said, the worst thing the Steelers and/or Tomlin could tell Jones about a potential trade is simply "no." Jones has nothing to lose in making the call despite what Tomlin said on Tuesday.
