Cowboys' Mike McCarthy confirms suspicion about Ezekiel Elliott's future
Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

Although the Dallas Cowboys' reunion with Ezekiel Elliott has a certain type of wholesomeness to it, it won't be like the good ol' days of Zeke's early years in the NFL.

Since the moment he was signed after the draft, one of the biggest storylines surrounding the team has been what should fans be expecting from the former No. 4 overall pick.

As I laid out shortly after the signing, the Cowboys would be smart to approach the position with a committee mentality instead of aiming to have a RB1 lead the way like they did when Elliott was around.

Head coach Mike McCarthy left no doubt on Saturday that it is indeed the Cowboys' plans heading into the 2024 NFL season.

"I don't think that's fair," McCarthy admitted to reporters when asked if he believed Zeke could be the same guy he was as before. "The guy carried the ball more than anybody in history in his first couple of years. That's not going to be his role, we're running back by committee but I think he'll definitely play at the level that he's played in my time here."

McCarthy being so candid about Zeke's role should erase any concern fans and media might have about the Cowboys forcing the issue trying to turn Elliott into a workhorse once again.

McCarthy, who is familiar with using the running back by committee approach, will have an intriguing challenge in balancing how he rotates a room consisting of Elliott and relatively inexperienced players. Rico Dowdle could very well spearhead the group over Elliott, as well.

"It's as natural of a transition as you'll ever see," said McCarthy of Elliott's return. "He walked in and he had that unbelievable smile and it's just like he never left, huge personality in the locker room (...) But some things have changed for him too, protection system is different, he has some new learning."
