Cowboys offseason gamble is paying off after 5 weeks

After the 2024 season ended we all knew the offense just needed to add around CeeDee Lamb, and for the first time in a long time, Jerry Jones went out and made a move in May.

When the Cowboys traded for George Pickens on May 7, 2025, in exchange for him and a 2027 sixth-round pick, the Cowboys sent a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Steelers.

Everyone knew the talent of Pickens was there, but it was a matter of, could he hold it together in the locker? Well, it has been five months, and not one report has come out about this guy, who everyone said was a major issue in Pittsburgh.

Gamble Paying Off

Just think about for a moment, if this offense did not have Pickens when Lamb went down, they would have no chance, and yet after two weeks without him, Pickens has proved why he is a top guy in this league, resulting in Dallas having the number one offense in football.

In Week 4, with Lamb sidelined, Pickens racked up eight catches on 11 targets for 134 yards and two touchdowns. This remarkable showing helped the Cowboys to a 40-point offensive performance, which ultimately resulted in a tie with the Green Bay Packers.

Then, in Week 5, Pickens turned just four targets into 57 yardsincluding a 43-yard touchdown reception. Now the former 2022 second-round pick is on track to do something he never came close to doing with the Steelers: earning double-digit touchdowns.

Pickens is one of only 17 players since 1970 to have 350+ yards and 5 receiving touchdowns in his first five games with a team.

I mean just think about that. That probably would not have happened if Lamb had been on the field the last two games, but this is what this offense needed.
