Cowboys QB Dak Prescott admits not being threatened by Trey Lance’s progress: 'I hope he pushes me'
Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Dak Prescott can’t afford to slip up, because Trey Lance is hot on his heels. In the make-or-break season of his career, the 30-year-old quarterback has to prove that he is still the man for the Dallas Cowboys.

Following Thursday’s practice at the Cowboys facility, Prescott spoke with the media and the first question apart from his contract talks was on Lance. The fourth year under center has already bagged praise from head coach Mike McCarthy for showing constant improvement since his move from the 49ers last year.

Prescott has witnessed this firsthand, going through the playbook together. The 3-time Pro Bowler agreed that Lance has aspirations of being the starter. However, he asserted that the 24-year-old’s presence has also compelled him to improve his game.

As long as he [Lance] is getting better, I am getting better. I hope he pushes me… I am confident in the person and the player I am. Dak Prescott said per the Athletic’s Jon Machota

Lance later spoke with Nick Harris of DallasCowboys.com and revealed that his confidence has been high through the training camp.

[My confidence] is much higher than [it was] when I got into the NFL… I feel great about where I'm at. Continuing to get better, continuing to learn, and continuing to be a better quarterback. Trey Lance said

Prescott has nothing to fear because Jerry Jones is by his side. The veteran owner has backed the under-center several times to succeed with the Dallas franchise.

Does the success of other Dallas sports teams make Dak Prescott jealous?

Texas has always been a hub for champions whether it’s football or any other sports. The Texas Rangers tasted World Series victory last year while the Dallas Stars are in the conference final this season. The Dallas Mavericks beat the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday to take a 2-0 lead in the NBA conference finals.

It’s a massive contrast to the ‘Americas Team’ who haven’t played in the NFC Championship game since 1995. Despite football being the biggest and most supported sport in the state, the Cowboys can’t seem to pay them back with silverware.

It should make Dak Prescott the quarterback of the Cowboys jealous of the other Dallas franchises.

It’s not jealousy but yeah it fires you up. Dak Prescott told Cowboys writer Patrick Walker

The pressure is on Prescott to deliver the Super Bowl and finally end the drought.

I want it because it only raises the stakes and makes it tougher on me. And I'm for that. Go win it. Rangers did it. Dak Prescott added

Whether he sticks around in Arlington depends on the 2024 season’s outcome. His contract is coming to an end and analysts project that Prescott would command a $60 million a year salary.
