The Dallas Cowboys enter Week 8 of the 2025 season with a 3-3-1 record and plenty of questions surrounding their defense. The team has shown flashes of strong play but has struggled with consistency, particularly in the secondary. As they prepare to face the Denver Broncos on Sunday, their situation at cornerback has become a concern following recent developments with Trevon Diggs.
On Saturday, the Cowboys announced that Diggs had been placed on injured reserve. The move means he will miss at least the next four games. Diggs had already missed last week’s matchup against the Washington Commanders due to a concussion, but the decision was reportedly not related to that injury.
According to Cowboys reporter Ed Werder, the team placed Diggs on IR because of lingering issues with his right knee. Werder reported that the Cowboys made the move to allow him to fully recover, noting that the team remains hopeful he could return later this season once healthy.
“While Trevon Diggs missed last week’s game because of a concussion, I’m told it was residual problems with his right knee that prompted the #Cowboys to place him on IR today,” Werder wrote on Saturday. “Team source says they want to get him healthy and not that deep at corner so his eventual return possible.”

Diggs’ absence is a major blow for Dallas. The two-time Pro Bowler remains one of the NFL’s top cornerbacks and a key part of the Cowboys’ defensive identity. This season, he has recorded 13 solo tackles and five assists in six games, continuing to play an important role before being sidelined. Since entering the league in 2020, Diggs has totaled 20 interceptions, including an NFL-best 11 in 2021, when he earned First-Team All-Pro honors.
Injuries, however, have been an issue. Diggs missed most of the 2023 season after tearing his ACL and was limited to just six games in 2024 due to a late-season knee surgery. Now dealing with another knee problem, his health remains a concern for the Cowboys, who are already short on depth at cornerback.
Dallas will now rely more heavily on DaRon Bland in the secondary as they face Denver’s passing offense in Week 8. The Cowboys hope that getting Diggs fully healthy will allow him to return for the second half of the season as they seek to return to the playoffs.
