Entering Dallas Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, there were a couple of position battles that had us intrigued.
One was the running back situation, but the other was the receiver position.
With CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens at the top of the depth chart, behind them were a host of players capable of making it as the third option for Brian Schottenheimer.
As camp has played out, Jalen Tolbert has continued to go about his business with little fanfare, while Jonathan Mingo and KaVontae Turpin have both splashed, so too rookie Traeshon Holden more recently.
But as we gear up for the Cowboys' joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams, how is the third receiver battle shaking out?
“We're going to roll guys through in that spot,” Schottenheimer said. “Turp obviously is different, Mingo's having a great camp, Tolbert, he doesn't get noticed sometimes, but he just goes out there and does a great job in every phase, the run blocking, in the receiving element, he just does everything right. Those three guys, if you were putting a depth chart out there today, they'd probably be the guys getting the first crack at it.”
There has been a lot of noise for Turpin and Mingo to be one of Dak Prescott's main weapons, but it is easy to forget that Tolbert posted 610 yards and seven touchdowns (led all Cowboys players) last season.
So, Jalen won't be easily moved off the third spot, and his abilities as a blocker and special teamer give him the edge over Mingo and Turpin, although both will see the field frequently in 2025.
And we do need to mention a fourth guy in rookie UDFA Holden. ... who might be a featured guy on Saturday night in the preseason opener at the Rams.
Granted, it is a good headache for Schottenheimer to have three genuine options to go with Pickens and Lamb, given how thin the receiver position was last year.
This might be a battle that goes down to the wire in Oxnard, because right now, there's a handful of players putting their hands up for a role in Schottenheimer's offense.
