Cowboys Sending T Nathan Thomas To Texans

Nathan Thomas is Houston-bound, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport. Thomas had competed with Tyler Guyton for the Cowboys’ left tackle job, but the incumbent held on. The former seventh-round pick will move into position as a swing option for the Texans.

Chosen in the 2024 draft, Thomas did not see game action as a Cowboys rookie. That made his place as a Guyton challenger all the more interesting. He played in 17 games last season and started four; 317 of Thomas’ 341 snaps came at left tackle last year. The Cowboys thought enough of Thomas to push Guyton, but Brian Schottenheimer revealed early in camp the former first-rounder would hang on to his job.

Dallas has since acquired Jones, including a third-round pick in a trade package that brought the 2023 first-round pick over from Pittsburgh. Jones, who follows the George Pickens Pittsburgh-to-Dallas trade route, has seen extensive time at both left and right tackle. It would appear a swing role is on tap for a disappointing Steeler who is on his way back from neck surgery. But the Jones trade appears to have made the Cowboys comfortable parting with Thomas.

The Texans traded longtime RT/LG Tytus Howard to the Browns and signed Braden Smith in free agency. Houston returns 2025 second-round pick Aireontae Ersery and re-signed Trent Brown this offseason. Former second-round pick Blake Fisher has not lived up to the draft billing, and Thomas’ arrival could complicate his path to a third Texans roster. If nothing else, the Texans have a few options at tackle thanks to this trade.
