Cowboys set to debut new weapon vs. NY Jets

An already surging Dallas Cowboys offense is set to add another weapon for the New York Jets’ sputtering defense to deal with at MetLife Stadium.

According to his Instagram, Cowboys rookie running back Jaydon Blue appeared to confirm that he will suit up against the Jets this afternoon.

The fifth-round rookie was a healthy scratch in Dallas’ first four games. However, the Cowboys are dealing with uncertainty surrounding their No. 2 running back, Miles Sanders, who did not practice this week due to knee and ankle injuries. Sanders is listed as questionable, and his status remains unknown with less than four hours until kickoff.

Blue, 21, played three years for the Texas Longhorns, carrying the ball 214 times for 1,161 yards and 11 touchdowns. In his junior year, Blue made a name for himself as a receiver, catching 42 passes for 368 yards and six touchdowns (a school record for running backs).

Dallas has enjoyed a surprisingly successful start to the year from its No. 1 running back, Javonte Williams, who has carried the ball 63 times for 312 yards (5.0 yards per carry) and four touchdowns. Williams’ production has been integral to the success of Dallas’ offense, which ranks fifth-best in the league with 28.5 points per game.

However, the Cowboys could stand to get more from their backs in the passing game. Williams has turned his 18 targets into just 74 receiving yards with no touchdowns. Perhaps this is where Dallas will look to utilize Blue if he suits up.

If the Cowboys deploy Blue in the passing game, he could cause trouble for a Jets defense with major coverage concerns at the linebacker position. New York’s linebackers have ceded a passer rating of 118.3 when targeted this season, with starter Jamien Sherwood allowing the highest mark of the unit at 129.4.

While Blue isn’t a thumper at 5-foot-9 and 195 pounds, he offers 4.38 speed, which could be troubling for a Jets team that struggled to contain Miami Dolphins burner De’Von Achane in last week’s loss.

Keep an eye out for Dallas’ young running back today.
