An NFL writer has proposed the "perfect'' trade scenario for the Dallas Cowboys to move up in the first round of the NFL Draft.
The Cowboys have the 12th selection in the first round. Their next selection is at 44. They have 10 picks overall, but most of them are later in the draft as they do not have a fourth-round pick.
Accordingly, a package that the Cowboys could create is to pair their own first-round pick with the 44th pick, in the second round.
Dallas does have a history of moving around in the draft, and COO Stephen Jones this week talked about such a thing - though his emphasis was about moving down from No. 12.
In this rumor-mill media creation, a site believes the Cowboys are going to need to trade up to select the wide receiver they really want, Tetairoa McMillan from Arizona.
The key team this outlet believes they can partner with on a trade is the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers pick in the eighth spot and Dallas could offer its first-round pick and the 44th pick for the rights to the Panthers pick in the first round and its third-round selection.
The outlet cites as its reasoning for the trade the notion that the Panthers have a "weak organization." They say it is easier to make trades with weak organizations. And they say they think the Panthers probably have a poor draft strategy like they have had in previous seasons.
The problems here?
1 - There is no "perfect'' trade; teams use the trade value chart to make fair deals.
2 - Dallas likes McMillan. But the Cowboys also value other top receivers here, including Matthew Golden and Luther Burden ... so why move up?
3 - The notion that the Panthers are "weak'' and will therefore make a dumb trade is - with all due respect - an amateurish one.
Indeed, whatever anyone thinks of Carolina's management before? New GM Dan Morgan just got hired a year ago, so there is no "weak'' track record to base this concept on.
