Cowboys Urged To Draft Confusing 'Best Fit'

FRISCO — Dallas Cowboys COO Stephen Jones had some pretty cryptic comments regarding the team's quarterback depth chart at the NFL Scouting Combine. At the time, it seemed clear that the play callers behind Dak Prescott were on their way out and the Cowboys wanted a fresh start.

Days later, those hints translated into headlines with longtime backup Cooper Rush signing with the Baltimore Ravens. Given Trey Lance's extremely limited experience on the field and admittedly lackluster tenure at The Star, the need for a backup became apparent.

Following some speculation about potential draft or trade targets, the Cowboys pulled the trigger on the latter, acquiring Joe Milton III from the New England Patriots. A young player oozing with upside, Dallas seems to have their quarterbacks group complete.

Prescott, Milton and journeyman Will Grier makeup the quarterbacks group at this point. But that may not rule out the original idea of selecting a quarterback late in next week's NFL Draft.

In fact, The Athletic tabbed the Cowboys as a "best fit" for Syracuse's Kyle McCord. A prospect seemingly destined to hold down a backup job in the league, Klassen has Dallas taking a waiver for some offseason competition behind Prescott.

”McCord is not an overwhelming talent," The Athletic writes. "His arm is just okay, and he’s not going to scare anyone on the move. Like any good NFL backup, however, McCord can run an offense efficiently and consistently. He really learned to play within himself at Syracuse, displaying good rhythm and decision-making as a thrower.”

The beauty of the Milton trade was not only in the Cowboys finding a fun option to enhance their depth, but also freeing up their strategy on draft day. A quarterback selection was not planned until Day 3 and now it is not a must-have either.

Yet, the Cowboys have the freedom to take a chance on a prospect they like, whether that be McCord or another quarterback in this class. Their smart and slightly aggressive problem solving makes a waiver on McCord plausible.

And if not, the Cowboys are still poised to move into OTA's and training camp without much concern about the quarterback position.
