Cowboys VP discusses futures of CeeDee Lamb and Trevon Diggs

Cowboys VP Stephen Jones is trying to maintain Dallas' Super Bowl-contending core, focusing on CeeDee Lamb's and Trevon Diggs' contract extensions.

Lamb and Diggs aren't the only key contributors the team is looking to extend. On Monday, Jones told ESPN's Todd Archer, "we've got a plan to extend" QB Dak Prescott. Per Archer, extending Prescott saves $22M in cap room.

Per OverTheCap, Dallas is $7.2M over the cap, making extensions for Lamb and Diggs challenging.

According to Spotrac, Lamb's contract has a fifth-year option (worth $19.8M). Diggs doesn't have a fifth-year option and has one year remaining on his contract. His market value is a four-year deal worth $15.4M annually via Spotrac.

Extending Prescott might require a 2023 pay cut. However, he might take it if the probability that both Lamb and Diggs stay increases.

Lamb has made consecutive Pro Bowls. Last season, he finished sixth in receiving yards (1,359), tied for sixth in receiving TDs (9) and tied for fifth in receptions (107) -- all career highs.

Diggs has also made consecutive Pro Bowls. In 2021, he led the NFL in interceptions (11), tying a Cowboys record.

Over the past two seasons, Dallas and Buffalo tied for the second-most regular-season wins (24), only trailing the Chiefs (26). Also, it has the sixth-best Super Bowl odds via Oddschecker.

Dallas wants to keep prospering. Therefore, it must retain elite contributors.
