Cowboys waiting to announce Jason Garrett decision
Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

There seems to be almost no chance the Cowboys sign Jason Garrett to a contract extension following a disappointing season that ended on Sunday without a playoff appearance, but Dallas is holding off on announcing its decision.

Dozens of reporters gathered at the Cowboys’ facility in Frisco on Monday awaiting news about Garrett’s future; they were told there would be no announcement and to go home at around 5 p.m. local time.

Garrett met with Cowboys players, Jerry Jones and the Jones family for a lengthy amount of time on Monday. It’s unclear why the Cowboys are not yet ready to announce a decision, but the belief remains that it is only a matter of time before the two sides officially part ways.

The issue could be logistics. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported on Monday that Garrett’s contract with the Cowboys officially expires on Jan. 14, so the two sides could be working toward a way to move that date up so they can move on from one another sooner.

One report claimed the Cowboys are preparing to clean house beyond just Garrett, although that has not yet been confirmed. Either way, big changes are still expected in Dallas.
