Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott is coming off his 10th year as the team's starter and is coming off a second straight year missing the playoffs. As he heads into the Pro Bowl Games, he had some thoughts on his career thus far.
Speaking to ALLDLLS.com, Prescott admitted that it feels like the "monkey on his back" is getting bigger every year that he doesn't even make the Super Bowl, let alone win one. He said that the opportunities for him are slipping away in ways that they didn't seem to when he was a rookie.
“Monkey, gorilla, you know, gets bigger each year that we don’t make it,” Prescott said. “And that’s real. It’s one of those things. You get here as a rookie and everybody thinks they can win the Super Bowl. and they think how easy it is. And when you have a year like I did as a rookie, you think you going to have multiple opportunities. And now in Year 10, having opportunities and not doing what you wanted as a team and individually, it hurts. And every year it just means even more. You want to be here, and you want to be playing. But the mindset I have is we go through everything for a purpose. And you can’t tell me that all these 10 years and every experience I’ve had wasn’t for us to be better and get there next year.”

That's been the biggest complaint of not just Dak, but NFL fans everywhere for the longest time. People have recognized for decades that the Cowboys had a pretty strong window in the late-2010s and early-2020s but that window is closing rapidly amid the rise of so many new powers across the NFL.
In the Cowboys' division alone, where they had three straight seasons of 12-5 records and playoff trips between 2021 and 2023, they simply couldn't get the job done once the calendar moved to January and were thoroughly embarrassed in their three playoff losses.
Dak Prescott turns 33 before the next season and is basically immune to being benched or traded for another two years due to his contract. The issue becomes whether the Cowboys will have the financial wherewithal to make moves to solidify the pieces around him.
The past few offseasons have shown that the Cowboys are a little too stingy when it comes to negotiating with their players. At such a critical point in their Super Bowl window, that mindset isn't going to help them.
