Dak Prescott changes tone of contract negotiations with Cowboys with latest fearless message
Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

It wasn't long ago that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott confidently told reporters a deal would get done with the franchise he's led since arriving at the NFL as a fourth-round rookie in 2016.

The 2023 MVP runner-up usually stays on the sidelines of contract negotiations, frequently pointing to his agent and the front office needing to be the ones who get the job done.

"I'm definitely confident, obviously it helps the team and it's important for the numbers," Prescott told reporters back in March, alluding to the salary cap impact an extension would have on the team. "It'll happen."

But on Friday, weeks after NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported there were no offers on the table for the quarterback, Prescott's tone was different when addressing reporters at Children’s Cancer Fund event.

"I don't have any fears," Prescott said on Friday when asked about the possibility of playing elsewhere, via The Athletic's Jon Machota. "I'm not going to say I fear being here or not, I don't fear either situation, to be candid. I love this game, I love to play, I love to better myself as a player and my teammates around me."

He followed his fearless statement by alluding to the possibility of playing for a team other than the Cowboys in what represents a significant change compared against his "it'll happen" comment from earlier in the offseason.

"Right now, it's with the Dallas Cowboys, that's where I want to be, that's where I am, and that's the focus" he said. "After the season we'll see where we're at and if the future holds that. And if not, we'll go from there."

Intentionally or not, Prescott explicitly saying "after the season" will only put more weight on the possibility of him playing out his deal on a contract year en route to free agency in 2025.

From Prescott's comments, it's clear negotiations between the two parties have yet to heat up. The Cowboys quarterback also said he wasn't seeking to become the highest-paid quarterback "necessarily."

For the first time in this saga, it appears Prescott is publicly being open about potentially playing elsewhere if a deal doesn't come to fruition with the franchise he's called home since arriving at the NFL.

Buckle up Cowboys Nation, this story is just getting started.
