The Dallas Cowboys are signing future Hall of Famer Tyron Smith to a one-day deal. That’s right, after a single-season spinoff playing for the New York Jets, the standout tackle is retiring in the silver and navy.
And Dak Prescott is congratulating his former teammate with an awesome message via his Instagram account.
"I always got your back, as you had mine!" Prescott wrote in an IG story. "Enjoy retirement! Grrrr."
The last part of the Cowboys quarterback's message might leave some confused. But it carries a significant meaning as Prescott is channeling his inner Tyron Smith with a grunt. For years, the tackle's grunts on the field when throwing a punch at defenders in the trenches were famous in the locker room.
"We always laugh because he’s quiet, right?” former Cowboys quarterback Cooper Rush said in 2023. “Whenever he talks, everyone goes like, ‘[grunt], [grunt] [grunt]."
Considered a freak of nature since the moment he stepped on an NFL field in 2011, Smith put together a career worthy of a one-way ticket to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
His decision to retire is unsurprising considering Smith’s age and injury history. His 2024 season with the Jets ended with yet another neck injury, adding another bullet point to a long list of back and neck issues.
At 34 years old, he's calling it a career. On Wednesday, the Cowboys wild hold a press conference with the iconic offensive lineman. Earlier in the year, Zack Martin held his own and now both will race each other to Canton, Ohio, with their first year of eligibility being in 2030.
Both have a chance at making it on their first year on the ballot. For now, they can kick back and relax away from football. They might miss is, but they've earned some rest.
