Dallas Cowboys Add CB Michael Ojemudia to Strengthen Secondary Depth
- Arizona Cardinals cornerback Michael Ojemudia (29) smiles after a play Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2024, during a joint practice with the Indianapolis Colts at Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield, IN.

The Dallas Cowboys have made another move that has us all wondering if Jerry Jones is playing chess or checkers. With the regular season breathing down their necks like an angry defensive coordinator, America’s Team has decided to pluck Michael Ojemudia from the UFL yes, that UFL to shore up their battered secondary.

Why the Cowboys Need Secondary Help Now

Let’s be brutally honest here: the Cowboys’ secondary has been more banged up than a rental car in a demolition derby. Injuries during training camp have left defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus scrambling for bodies like it’s Black Friday at Best Buy. Enter Michael Ojemudia, the former third-round pick who’s been bouncing around the league like a ping-pong ball in a hurricane.

The timing isn’t coincidental. With their final preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons looming Friday night at AT&T Stadium, the Cowboys needed warm bodies who could theoretically cover receivers without tripping over their own feet. Ojemudia fits that bill barely.

Michael Ojemudia’s Rocky NFL Journey

Here’s where it gets interesting (and by interesting, I mean sad). Michael Ojemudia was drafted by the Denver Broncos in 2020 with legitimate expectations. His rookie season? Actually decent. The Iowa product managed 62 total tackles, four forced fumbles, and six pass breakups across 16 games. Not exactly Deion Sanders territory, but hey, it was something.

Then 2021 happened. Two games. That’s it. Two measly games before his body decided to betray him faster than a politician’s campaign promises. The Bears claimed him off waivers in 2022 probably because someone in Chicago’s front office confused him with someone else and he managed exactly one game appearance.

The Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals both took flyers on him, presumably because their scouts were having slow days and needed to justify their paychecks. Spoiler alert: he never saw the field for either team.

From NFL Castoff to UFL Champion

However, here’s where our story takes a slightly redemptive turn. While most former NFL players are posting workout videos on social media and desperately sliding into GM’s DMs, Michael Ojemudia actually did something productive. He joined the DC Defenders in the UFL and helped them win the championship.

Sure, it’s not exactly the Super Bowl, but it’s better than sitting on your couch arguing with strangers on Twitter about whether Dak Prescott is elite. The man stayed in game shape, learned some humility, and probably rediscovered his love for the game somewhere between getting pancaked by semi-professional offensive linemen.

The Matt Eberflus Connection Makes Sense

Here’s the one part of this signing that actually makes football sense: Michael Ojemudia already knows defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus from their time together in Chicago. In a league where continuity matters more than your ex’s opinion about your new haircut, having that existing relationship could be the difference between useful depth and complete disaster.

Eberflus knows exactly what he’s getting a player who’s been humbled by the league’s harsh realities but still has enough athletic ability to contribute when called upon. It’s like buying a used car from your brother-in-law; you know all the problems upfront, but at least you trust the seller.

What This Move Really Means for Dallas

Let’s cut through the optimistic spin and get to the brutal truth: this signing screams depth chart desperation. The Cowboys aren’t signing Michael Ojemudia because they think he’s the missing piece to their Super Bowl puzzle. They’re signing him because they need someone who can run in a straight line and occasionally bat down a football without falling over.

But you know what? Sometimes desperation breeds innovation. Sometimes the guy everyone else gave up on finds a second wind in a familiar system. Sometimes the UFL champion becomes the unlikely hero who picks off the game-winning pass in January.

Probably not, but stranger things have happened in Dallas like convincing fans that “this is our year” for the 28th consecutive season.
