The Dallas Cowboys made a big move on Sunday following their incredible 40-37 overtime win against the New York Giants in their home opener at AT&T Stadium. After the victory, team owner and general manager Jerry Jones announced the signing of defensive end Jadevon Clowney in a move that aims to “add some real depth” to the roster.
On Monday, head coach Brian Schottenheimer spoke to reporters to share his honest thoughts on the move. The first-year HC had nothing but high praise for Clowney.
"We're in the business of adding football players and he is a damn good football player,” Schottenheimer said, via Cowboys beat writer Ali Jawad on X. “He's hungry he's not just here to play pass rusher he's here to affect the game and stop the run and affect the QB by moving them off the spot."
The Clowney signing comes three weeks after the Cowboys pulled the trigger on the Micah Parsons trade, sending the two-time All-Pro linebacker to the Green Bay Packers following a drama-filled past month or so.
Clowney also got the chance to speak to the media on Monday, and he made it abundantly clear that he does not consider himself to be a one-for-one replacement for Parsons.
"No, that's Micah Parsons,” he said . “I'm Jadeveon Clowney. I came in here to be me. They could have used me with him."
Clowney has been with six different NFL teams over the past 11 years, with the last being the Carolina Panthers last season. He is no Micah Parsons, but the three-time Pro Bowl DE is no bum. He has a wealth of experience under his belt, and he still has a lot of gas left in the tank.
Schottenheimer likely won’t be utilizing Clowney as an every-down starter moving forward, but there’s no denying that he’s a great option to have, especially after Parsons’ departure left a gaping hole in the Dallas defense.
Clowney’s first chance to prove his worth will be on Sunday when the Cowboys face off against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.
