Dallas Cowboys Could Emerge As Ryan Tannehill Suitor
Steve Roberts-USA TODAY Sports

Amidst uncertainty surrounding Dak Prescott‘s future with the Dallas Cowboys, the prospect of acquiring a seasoned quarterback gains considerable appeal for the team’s front office.

Patrik Walker of DallasCowboys.com recently proposed the idea of former Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill as a viable option in free agency.

“A look at Tannehill might be worth it in the realm of possibly being a potential upgrade to Rush, while also providing insurance in the event Lance doesn’t progress the way the Cowboys would like to see as they ramp up work on their developmental QB program. The fact I’m intrigued by this at all means there might be something there to consider.”

Tannehill, a former Pro Bowler boasting 151 career starts, remains unsigned, making him an intriguing prospect, particularly in light of the latest developments concerning Prescott. Walker highlighted Tannehill’s credentials in a February 13, 2024 article titled “Open Market: Intriguing Free Agent QBs for Cowboys.”

With an impressive track record and experience under his belt, Tannehill could inject depth and stability into the Cowboys’ quarterback roster. Following the completion of a four-year, $118 million contract with the Titans, Tannehill finds himself seeking a new team. According to Spotrac, his projected market value stands at a reasonable one-year, $4.9 million contract.

Tannehill’s standout performance in the 2020 season saw him throw for 3,819 yards, 33 touchdowns, and just 7 interceptions, with a completion rate of 65.5%. Additionally, he contributed 266 rushing yards and 7 rushing touchdowns, showcasing his versatility and athleticism.

Despite already having three quarterbacks in Prescott, Trey Lance, and Cooper Rush, the addition of Tannehill, or another veteran signal-caller, could signal the end of Rush’s tenure with the team. Rush, who attracted interest from multiple teams during the 2023 free agency period before re-signing with the Cowboys, might fetch a late-round pick in a potential trade scenario.

While Ryan Tannehill may not represent a long-term solution in the event of Prescott’s departure, his presence would provide the Cowboys with valuable insurance against unforeseen circumstances involving their star quarterback.
