Dallas Cowboys could sign backup QB for Dak Prescott

The Dallas Cowboys might have locked up star quarterback Dak Prescott long-term earlier in the offseason. But they are in need of an upgrade behind him.

Current backups Garrett Gilbert, Cooper Rush and Ben DiNucci have started a combined two games during their careers. With Prescott returning from a devastating leg injury, having someone with experience behind him might make sense.

According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, that could come in the form of former Denver Broncos veteran backup Jeff Driskel.

“Cowboys flew in free agent QB Jeff Driskel tonight for a Friday visit, source said. A good chance Driskel signs, becomes favorite to serve as Dak Prescott’s primary backup in 2021,” the report read.

Does Jeff Driskel make sense for the Dallas Cowboys?

In short, yes. A sixth-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers back in 2016, the former Former and Louisiana Tech star has started a combined nine games in his career — throwing 13 touchdowns against eight interceptions while adding three scores on the ground.

Last season with the Denver Broncos, Driskel replaced an injured Drew Lock for one start. That came in a 28-10 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with Driskel throwing for 176 yards and a score.

Interestingly enough, the 28-year-old Driskel started a game against these very same Dallas Cowboys back in 2019. He tallied three total touchdowns in a losing effort.

According to Mike Fisher of Sports Illustrated, some within the Cowboys’ front office had Driskel rated higher than Prescott leading up to the 2016 NFL Draft. The two might now be teammates.
