Dallas Cowboys Face Key Decision at Left Tackle

The Dallas Cowboys are in the midst of their offseason program and have to decide who will be the starting left tackle this upcoming season.

The Cowboys selected left tackle Tyler Guyton with the 29th overall pick in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. While he showed flashes of potential, Guyton experienced an up-and-down rookie season. Guyton will need to show the coaching staff he has taken a significant leap in his development this offseason to hold onto his starting spot.

Yet ... we work on the assumption that he's the guy.

Meanwhile, 2023 fifth-round pick Asim Richards has steadily developed into a solid prospect as blind-side protector and word from inside The Star is that he could potentially push Guyton for the starting gig if the competition remains close.

Indeally, both players will bring the best out of each other and healthy competition is always good for a team striving for greatness.

But rumors of change - or at least of competition - are in the air.

“Brian Schottenheimer has said repeatedly that the Cowboys are going to play their best five on the offensive line,” DallasCowboys.com’s Tommy Yarrish wrote. “Is Tyler Guyton one of their five best offensive linemen after last season? Right now, I would say no, but he's got an entire OTA, minicamp and training camp period to work through before the season kicks off, so both he and Asim Richards can prove that they are the guy to start at left tackle.

“Richards has the benefit of experience, but Guyton has the higher ceiling and with this coaching staff, I think they'll put extra emphasis on making sure that he's ready to go and can be the left tackle of the future for Dallas. Does that mean Richards is completely out of the running? Absolutely not, but he'll have to really show this coaching staff something in my opinion if he wants to get the starting job.”

Left tackle is one of the most important positions on the field and Dallas is certainly looking to protect their $240 million Dak Prescott investment.

Guyton and Richards are poised to battle all summer for the job, and while the organization would surely like to be proven right about using a first-round pick on Guyton, in the end?

May the best man win.
