Even before the 2024 NFL season has started, there are several issues that will distract certain teams in the league. For the Dallas Cowboys, though, the contracts extensions of key players will surely be one of the biggest distractions any franchise will have to face in the coming months.
The Cowboys matched their 12-5 record from the previous two seasons, clinching the NFC East division title for the second time in three years. Despite a loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Cowboys secured a playoff berth when the Packers and Falcons lost, marking their third consecutive postseason appearance.
However, the Cowboys’ playoff run was short-lived, as they were crushed 48-32 by the seventh-seeded Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card round. This loss made Dallas the first team to lose to a seventh seed team since the playoff bracket expanded for the 2020-21 season.
It was a disappointing end to a season that saw the Cowboys boast one of the league’s best-ranked offenses and defenses. The loss also marked the first time a team failed to reach a Conference Championship game despite winning at least 12 games in three consecutive seasons.
After a disappointing finish last season, the Cowboys are looking forward later this year to rectify their early playoff exit. However, an article by Alex Ballentine for Bleacher Report identified an issue that may distract Dallas from its goal.
“It’s bad enough when a team has one major contract extension on the horizon, but the Dallas Cowboys have a trio of big-money deals that are bound to continue making headlines.
CeeDee Lamb, Dak Prescott and Micah Parsons are integral to the team’s success, but all three have potentially uncomfortable contract negotiations ahead,” Ballentine wrote.
As it stands, all three stars are key players for Dallas as the franchise hopes to put on a better performance this season. On the other hand, their potential combined salaries will definitely take a lot of time and resources from the Cowboys.
It remains to be seen whether Dallas’ front office can resolve the extensions of these players before the issue can affect their upcoming campaign. In any case, getting the job done sooner than later is imperative for the Cowboys.
